Right now, Mifiel only accepts PDF files for documents sent for signature. Each document can be up to 20 MB, which is about 1,000 text-only pages. For the best experience, though, we recommend keeping your document under 13 MB, or about 650 text-only pages. This keeps things running smoothly for everyone involved (you, your signers, and your viewers), with no delays when signing, downloading, or viewing the document on their devices. If you've had trouble uploading PDFs to Mifiel to request signatures, or downloading the signed XML and PDF files, here are a few ways to avoid these issues. ### **How to create a smaller PDF from the start** The most common reason a PDF is large is that it was made by scanning a paper document. So our first recommendation is to make sure the file you send for signature isn't a scan. If you scan your documents before uploading them to Mifiel so you can stamp or initial each page, to keep pages from being removed or changed after signing, you don't need to do this. Documents signed in Mifiel include a certificate of data preservation that guarantees their integrity. This means[no page can be changed, removed, or replaced once the document is signed](https://blog.mifiel.com/dudas-implementar-firma-digital-contratos/). Also, if a document will be signed electronically,[all parties should sign it that way](https://blog.mifiel.com/combinar-firmas-digitales-autografas-contrato/). There's no need for some parties to sign on paper, scan the document with their handwritten signatures, and then have everyone else sign digitally. ### **What if I don't have the original digital file?** Scan the paper document only if you don't have the original file. To avoid creating a very large file, try one of these options in your scanning app: 1. Turn on the app's optical character recognition (OCR) feature, if it has one. 2. If OCR isn't available, lower the resolution using the "DPI" setting. Try different resolutions (200 DPI or lower) until you get a PDF that's within Mifiel's size limit and still easy to read. Here's how to easily reduce its size. ### **How to optimize a PDF to reduce its size** Images and other graphics are usually what make a PDF large, so remove any images that aren't essential to the document. There are two simple, safe ways to reduce the file size: - **On macOS**, the Preview app can shrink your document's file size. Open the PDF in Preview, go to **File \> Export**, choose **PDF** under "Format," select **Reduce File Size** under "Quartz Filter," and click **Save**. - **On Windows or Mac**, if your PDF was created from a Word document (.doc or .docx), open the original document and: - Use a single font throughout the document. - Export it as a PDF and select **Optimize for: Minimum size (publishing online)**. Then use the new PDF when you send the document for signature in Mifiel.
