Valid (unexpired) e.firma
If your e.firma has not expired or been revoked, renewing it is very simple from the SAT's website using its CERTIFICA and CertiSAT Web tools. This applies regardless of whether your e.firma belongs to an individual (persona física) or a legal entity (persona moral).
Revoked e.firma
Renewing any revoked e.firma, whether for an individual or a legal entity, and regardless of how long ago it was revoked, must be done in person at the SAT offices in a similar process to the one you went through the first time you got it.
Expired e.firma
If your e.firma is for an individual, as of June 22, 2020, the SAT has enabled online renewal of expired certificates.
If your e.firma is for a legal entity, as of June 2021, the SAT has enabled online renewal of expired certificates.
Requirements to renew an expired e.firma online
- The public certificate (.cer file) of your e.firma that has not expired more than a year ago. E.g., if it expired on October 5, 2019, the last day to renew it is October 5, 2020, at 11:59 pm. If it expired more than a year ago, you will have to reapply at the SAT offices. For legal entities, they must keep the same legal representative, and they must have a valid personal e.firma certificate.
- The private key (.key file) corresponding to the certificate and its password. In the case of legal entities, the legal representative must have the files and password of their personal e.firma handy.
- A computer or cell phone with Internet access, camera, and microphone.
- RFC.
- An email address.
- A mobile phone number.
- In the case of renewing an individual's e.firma, your official identification. Accepted forms of ID: valid voting card, passport, Cédula Profesional with photo, driver's license, INAPAM card, or if you are a foreigner, a valid immigration document.
Online Renewal Process for an Individual's Expired e.firma (persona física)
- Log into the SAT ID portal.
- Click on the "Iniciar trámite renovación de e.firma" option.
- Click on "Comenzar", accept the terms, and follow the portal's instructions (all of them will be in Spanish).
- During the process, you will be asked to upload your personal identification and record a video saying a phrase out loud.
- When you receive a positive response to the procedure in your email, you can renew your expired individual's e.firma following a process similar to that of renewing a valid e.firma, but selecting the "Renovación del certificado con autorización de SAT ID" option.

Online Renewal Process for a Legal Entity's Expired e.firma (persona moral)
The process is very similar to that of a valid e.firma, since it doesn't require the use of the SAT ID tool. In the following SAT video, you will find how to do it.
